About Us
The Southside church of Christ had its beginning in 1995. Those who began this work were former members of the North Jackson Street church in Houston, Mississippi. For two years they met in rented facilities but in 1997 they entered their own building at 1368 Highway 15 South in Woodland, Mississippi. The building is located about 4 miles south of the court square in downtown Houston. We are known as the Southside church in Houston although our mailing address is Woodland.
We are a conservative thinking group. We believe the Bible to be the verbally inspired word of God (1 Corinthians 2:1-13; 2 Timothy 3:16,17; Ephesians 3:1-5). In everything that we do or teach we strive to be able to turn to the scriptures and find authority for that action or teaching in the form of a statement, command, example approved by the apostles or a necessary implication. We strive to speak as the oracles of God (1 Peter 4:11) and to do all things in the name of Jesus Christ (Colossians 3:17).
When you visit our services you will find us singing without mechanical accompaniment or special singing groups. We will have prayers with one person leading aloud and others following silently. There will be a sermon based upon the Bible or else classes where the Bible is the textbook. On the first day of the week (Sunday) we will have the Lord’s Supper. Also on the first day of the week an opportunity will be given for the members to contribute financially into the church treasury in order to have funds to do the work the Lord as given. Visitors are not asked to give into this fund but their contributions are not rejected if they are offered. Male members will be taking the leading roles in our public services if any are present. However, some of the Bible classes will be taught by female saints.
We believe the work God has given the congregation to do lies in three areas. (1) Providing a place and the means that saints are taught the scriptures and edified spiritually as they worship God. (2) Teaching the word of God to those who are yet unsaved. This teaching is done with whatever means and methods are available and affordable. (3) Providing for the material needs of our members and of children of God in other areas as ability and knowledge afford. We believe there are areas of work where the individual Christian can work that is not allowed by the congregation as a unit. We would be happy to discuss them with anyone.
Any and all questions about our activities are welcome. We stand happy and ready to give a reason for the things that we do and an explanation of why these things are done. Send questions to jf@houstonchurchofchrist.com
